Have you ever thought that your grandparents did not suffer from some food allergies? Nowadays, allergy is the most common problem that affects most of the children. It has become a household concern that is rapidly increasing its rate. It does not only make life difficult for those who suffer from this epidemic, but it also affects your pocket.

Food allergy reaction sends more than 200,000 people to the emergency department every year. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has conducted a study in 2013 which has shown that food allergies among children have increased by 50% between 1997 and 2011.

According to Dr. Mercola, allergy to milk is the number one food allergy in the United Stated because of the presence of growth hormones in milk and overuse of antibiotics in factory farming, which started in 1990’s.

Is Our Food Loaded with Something that Wasn’t There Before?

Processed foods can lead to different allergies for many reasons. They are high in flavors, food colorings, preservatives and many other additives that can cause some food allergy. Among these reasons, there is one even more serious reason that lurks in the American food stores.

The mid-1990’s have brought about the introduction of new food proteins into the food supply, even though people were unaware of that. According to O’Brien, this was done to maximize the profit for the food industry. However, no human trials were conducted to find out whether these proteins are safe for human and animal consumption.

One particular food that underwent significant change was milk thus becoming number one food allergen in the US.

In 1994, the dairy industry started using rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone), a genetically engineered growth hormone in order to increase the production of milk. However, it has led to higher rates of disease in cows. For this reason, the dairy industry started using more antibiotics, but this just resulted in an increased rate of antibiotic-resistant superbugs in humans.

So, Why Didn’t Your Parents Have Food Allergies?

It is so simple; they did not eat processed foods full of preservatives but healthy food which came from farms. Babies were breastfed, and people did not practice dieting like today. Nowadays, people experience bloating and obesity due to the added additives, chemicals, preservatives, stabilizers, flavoring, food coloring and GMO products. The meat was completely organic and was not loaded with chemicals like today. People practiced eating out only when they visited friends and family and most of the time they cooked at home. The chicken broth was a traditional method for treating most of the ailments.

They do not stay inside, on computers, cell phones, and gaming systems but they played outside, rode bikes, climbed trees and have fun in nature.

They did not go to doctors for any reason, but they tried to treat many health conditions in a traditional way, with broths, soups, and rest. In fact, they trusted the body’s natural ability to cure itself more than we believe today. Their medicine was concentrated in their food.

A healthy diet and lifestyle play an important role in your bodies. Every cell in your body needs the correct nutrition in order to function properly.

We can conclude that food allergies are the result of many environmental factors that we live in, which were unfamiliar for the previous generations. You would probably wonder what is yet to come because more and more chemicals are being added to the food we consume on a daily basis.
