At-Home Nails That Last

You need nails that can stand up to your hectic schedule. Juggling work, exercise and family leaves little time for touch-ups. Follow these tricks from the Jin Soon Natural Hand & Foot Spas in New York City to make your manicure last all week.

1. Get Nails in Shape. Trim with a straight-edge clipper, then file and buff to remove any rough edges. Try: Revlon Speed Buff Nail Shine Buffer.

2. Treat Cuticles. Soften them by soaking fingertips for three to five minutes in warm water infused with an essential oil. Follow by tracing nails with cuticle oil, then gently push cuticles back with an orange stick. Try: Elemis Lavender Essential Oil; Sunny Brae Body Works Lavender & Chamomile Neem Nail Oil.

3. Hydrate Your Hands. Massage hands with a rich lotion containing avocado or shea butter to keep skin plump and youthful. Try: OPI Avojuice Skin Quenchers in Cran & Berry Juicie.

4. Prep for Polish. Dip a cotton swab in remover and wipe it over your nail beds to eliminate oils (this helps polish bond to nails). Follow with a nourishing base coat. Try: Lippmann Collection Rehydrating Base Coat.

5. Brush on Your Favorite Shade. Apply two thin layers of polish. If your headed to an event or special occasion, try a glam red or a pale shimmer. Seal each tip with a swipe of polish to help prevent chips. Try: Chanel Nail Colour in Ruby Slipper; Shu Uemura Nail Enamel in Arctic Light.

6. Finish With a Top Coat. Protect color with a clear coat. After a few minutes, spritz on a setting spray to speed drying time. Try: Creative Nail Design Solar Speed Spray.

7. Maintain Your Manicure. Condition cuticles daily with a nourishing formula. An extra layer of top coat midweek prevents premature chipping. Try: Almay Massage & Grow Nail and Cuticle Wax.
