Apple cider vinegar is a common addition to many households as it is a tasty additive to a variety of meals. In folk medicine it is often touted as a cure for almost every ailment imaginable. Although most of these claims are not backed up by research, there are still many benefits that can be provided by apple cider vinegar that have been studied by experts.
For example, a study conducted in Japan followed 175 obese people who followed similar diets, but some of them took apple cider vinegar while others didn’t. At the end of the study, those who used the apple cider vinegar had lost more weight than the group of people that didn’t. The researchers believe that apple cider vinegar may activate certain genes that are involved in the break down of fat.
Apple cider vinegar was also found to be effective at lowering blood sugar levels. According to Carol Johnston, PhD, the director of Arizona State University’s nutrition program, apple cider vinegar prevents the digestion of starch, something that causes a raise in blood sugar levels.
“Apple cider vinegar’s anti-glycemic effect is very well documented,” Johnston says.“It doesn’t block the starch 100%, but it definitely prevents at least some of that starch from being digested and raising your blood sugar.”
