When some person when breathes during its sleep is making a rattling or snorting noise, then this condition is known as snoring. This kind of noise is coming from the tissue in the mouth, soft palate, throat vibrating or nose. There are some people who do not snore frequently and they are not making loud noise. But also there are another group of people who snore every single night and their sound is too loud which in many cases can be heard in the next room. Healthcare professionals are trying to assess the problems of some individual with the use of grading systems.
Symptoms of snoring
When you breathe during your sleep and you are making a noticeable sound, then this condition is known as snoring. Your nose, the soft tissue at the back of your mouth or throat vibrating is making this kind of sound. The soft tissue that is vibrating will make some sound that will not be the same as the sound with another person. If your soft tissue at the back of your nose is vibrating when you snore, then you will make a pinched nasal sound which will not be too loud. Also you can make a louder sound which is also known as throaty or guttural sound if the back of your uvula (throat) or the soft palate (top of your mouth) is vibrating.
When there are areas that are blocked or vibrating, then you will have snoring. In the deepest stage of your sleep you have the biggest chances to snore. This is usually 90 after you have fallen in sleep. In the most cases people snore too loud when they are sleeping on their back. If you have noticed that your snoring has made changes in your everyday life, then you must talk with your doctor.
There is grading system which healthcare professionals are using to know how severe the snoring of some individual is. Here are the grades:
- Grade one snoring: This is a simple snoring. In this grade, the individual is not making to loud sounds and it snores infrequently. If you are affected with this kind of snoring, then your breathing is not affected. This means that you will not have any serious problem in your health. But this kind can upset or irritate your partner when you are sleeping.
- Grade two snoring: In this kind, you are snoring more than 3 days per week which means that you are snoring on a regular base. Some people who suffer from this kind of problem can have mild to moderate breathing difficulties while they are sleeping. This means that the quality of your sleep will be decreased. You will feel sleepy and tired through all the day.
- Grade three snoring: In this grade, your sound is too loud. You do this every night and your snoring can be heard in the room next to you. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition which is related with the snoring. In this kind of condition your airways are becoming totally or partially blocked in a period of ten seconds. In this case you have a lack of oxygen which is triggering your brain to wake you up for a short period to restore normal breathing or to take you out of a deep sleep into a lighter state of sleep. During the night there can be repeated episodes of waking and snoring. This will make you feel sleepy through the next day. This means that you can also have some problems in your everyday activities and you will not will energy to do them.
Causes of snoring
When you breathe in, then your soft tissue in your head and in your neck are having vibration which leads to snoring. Then this condition can affect:
- Uvula which is a small cone – shaped section of the tissue that is hanging from the soft palate between your tonsils
- Nasal passages
- Tonsils which are two small glands above your tongue where your mouth meets the throat
- Base of the tongue
- Soft palate is a soft layer of tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth
Increased risk factors for snoring
There are some situations which can increase your risk of getting snoring:
- Drinking alcohol
- Allergic rhinitis
- Sedatives and some types of antidepressants
